Your Child's First Assessment Shouldn't Feel Overwhelming

The 4+ entrance assessment is often a child's very first experience of being observed, assessed, and separated from a parent.

For many families, it can feel:

  • Too early – "Is my three-year-old really ready for this?"
  • Unfamiliar – "What exactly are schools looking for?"
  • Overwhelming – "How do I prepare without creating pressure?"

You're not alone in feeling this way.

Hundreds of families come to us asking the same questions. And here's what we tell them:

4+ preparation should not be about pressure or pushing children ahead.
Instead, it should focus on confidence, curiosity, listening skills, and emotional readiness, the qualities schools are truly looking for

A Calm, Confident Start to Your Child's School Journey

At Academic Success, we believe young children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and engaged.

Our 4+ programmes are designed to:

  • Help children feel comfortable and capable in school-style settings
  • Build the independence and listening skills schools value most
  • Give parents clarity, reassurance, and expert guidance throughout the process

It's not about being perfect. It's about being prepared.

What is the 4+ entrance assessment?

The 4+ assessment is used by many selective independent schools to understand how ready a child is for formal learning.

Assessments are typically play-based and observation-led, but they are carefully designed to assess key early skills.

6 Key Areas Schools Observe:

  • Listening & Following Instructions
Can your child follow simple, multi-step directions?
  • Clear Communication
Can they express needs, answer questions, and engage in conversation?
  • Fine Motor Control
Pencil grip, mark-making, using scissors and manipulatives
  • Early Number & Letter Awareness
Recognising shapes, counting, identifying some letters
  • Social Confidence & Independence
Separating from parents, interacting with peers, asking for help
  • Calm & Resilience
Managing transitions, staying engaged, handling new situations

Important to Know

Most assessments are play-based, but the skills schools look for can be gently built through routine, language and independence. Preparation at this age is not about worksheets or academic acceleration.

It’s about habits, confidence and familiarity with adult-led expectations.

Choose Your Starting Point
Every family's journey is different. Here's how we can support you:

Most families book multiple mock assessment to gain clarity and see progress. We also offer ongoing readiness classes.

Start with clarity: Know Where Your Child Stands

For many families, a mock assessment is the most helpful first step in the 4+ journey.

Our 4+ mock assessments are designed to give children calm, age-appropriate exposure to the type of environment and expectations they will experience during a real school entrance assessment.

They also give parents clear, expert insight into their child’s readiness without pressure or over-preparation.

Places are released in small groups throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About 4+ Assessments

No. 4+ assessments are play-based and observation-led. Schools are looking for listening skills, communication, independence, confidence and fine motor control — not formal academics.

Preparation at this age is not about tutoring or worksheets. It’s about gently building confidence, routines, language and independence in a calm, age-appropriate way.

That is very common. Our mock assessments and readiness classes are designed to help children feel comfortable in small groups and around unfamiliar adults, without pressure.

Families typically begin exploring readiness 9–12 months before assessments take place. Starting early allows preparation to feel relaxed and natural.

No. Everything we do is designed to feel like guided play. If a child is not ready or feels unsettled, we tell parents honestly and advise waiting.
